Our business

Exeter Solar Ltd is a renewable energy business. Principally we design and install both solar PV and solar thermal systems. However we can go further by offering some of our customers whole site energy management solutions.

We mainly serve the domestic and commercial sectors, but have installed systems on school buildings, farms, museums and similar establishments.

Our mission and focus is to save you money on your energy bills and earn you money from your energy generation by helping you gain access to the financial support available via the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), or alternative government backed payment schemes.

Why use Exeter Solar?

Exeter Solar is a small local company operating within a framework of high ethical standards and we firmly believe in old fashioned principles of quality, service and honesty. Primarily we strive to do the job right, and believe that our reputation is of more value than profit.

Austin 7We come from a deep rooted background in the construction industry and are not a “here today gone tomorrow” business. We work strictly in accordance with industry standards, be they manufacturers’ recommendations, microgeneration MCS standards or what is recognised as “good building practice”.

We understand how the individual elements of your property work together to form an integrated building structure. Having this knowledge and experience means that we will not knowingly compromise the integrity of your building from any installation works we undertake.

We like to give our customers the assurance and peace of mind that the job will be done right and not done just to a time deadline. We have seen that the imposition of unachievable installation times inevitably leads to poor workmanship. For example, roof tiles are not cut or adjusted, not replaced properly or made weather-tight; electrical cables from the panels are not tied or secured correctly, leading to premature failure of the electrical system; roof anchors are poorly fixed to the rafters resulting in premature failure and possibly the loss of manufacturers’ warranties.

Our team

The business is principally managed by the Managing Director Mr Nigel Skudder BSc MCIOB, who is a Chartered Project Manager and Chartered Builder by profession and the founder of the business.

In addition to his considerable depth of experience in the construction industry, Mr Skudder is technically qualified in many aspects of the renewable energy business and has spent recent years studying and achieving further qualifications, ranging from the NICEIC Solar Thermal Hot Water certification to the SMA Inverters advanced installer programme.

We have teams of highly competent and experienced electricians and plumbers for day to day installation works, which are closely managed and supervised by our senior staff.

For the larger and more challenging projects, the business is further supported by our partner company Encore Electrical, which is principally owned by Mr Simon Hegarty. Mr Hegarty and his team of technically trained, qualified and experienced electricians carry out the installation, testing and certification of sometimes complex electrical installation works including new sub-mains and three phase supplies, all to the District Network Operators (DNO) stringent requirements.

Hands on approach to our business

All of our team members are very much “hands on” and have a background of practical experience, including design, office and administration staff.

Our passion for renewables extends to our staff members having solar PV systems and some solar thermal installations on their own properties, so that they have direct first-hand experience of fixing, using, monitoring and troubleshooting equipment of their own. We can therefore claim first-hand experience of making Renewable Heat Incentive applications to facilitate discussions with our customers from direct knowledge and some authority on the subject.
